2014 SAGE Awards – recognition for PCSG board member
Winners of the 2014 SAGE Awards (Shire Award for Gastrointestinal Excellence) were announced at the British Society of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting earlier this year.
First place and a development grant of £10,000 went to clinicians from the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital for their innovative, internet-based remote management service for IBD patients. The Inflammatory Bowel Disease – Supported Self Help and Management Programme (IBD-SSHAMP) gives patients direct access to specialists if they have concerns or require an urgent outpatient appointment. They receive self-management advice based on completion of a symptomatic disease activity index, with poor scores instantly communicated to the hospital’s IBD team.
PCSG board member Dr Marion Sloan was part of the second-placed team from Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Led by Dr Alan Lobo, the team’s innovative project, Gastroenterology Without Walls, combined a community gastroenterology service, a gastroenterology ambulatory service and an emergency consultant led gastrointestinal haemorrhage service.
Third place was awarded to a team from the Freeman Hospital liver unit. Led by Dr Stuart McPherson, their project, CHASE-B: Chinese Hepatitis B – Awareness, Survey and Education, carries out Hepatitis C screening amongst the Chinese community and provides educational material designed to help patients manage the condition.
